Congratulations!

You've mastered the home row basics. Now, head to the Practice page to practice Level 1 & 2!

Step 1: Mastering the Home Row

The foundation of touch typing is the Home Row. This is where your fingers will rest by default, allowing you to reach all other keys with minimal movement. Keeping your fingers on the home row improves speed, accuracy, and reduces strain. This step focuses on the primary top row keys: asdf and jkl;.

Finger Placement:

Left Hand

  • Pinky Finger: on the 'A' key
  • Ring Finger: on the 'S' key
  • Middle Finger: on the 'D' key
  • Index Finger: on the 'F' key

Right Hand

  • Index Finger: on the 'J' key
  • Middle Finger: on the 'K' key
  • Ring Finger: on the 'L' key
  • Pinky Finger: on the ';' (semicolon) key

Your thumbs should rest lightly on the Space Bar. You'll notice small bumps on the 'F' and 'J' keys; these are guides to help you find the home row without looking.

Practice typing the sequence asdf jkl; repeatedly, focusing on accuracy and returning your fingers to the home row after each key press. This will help build muscle memory.

Ready to practice? Head over to the Practice page and start with Level 1 & 2 to build your muscle memory!

Step 2: Conquering the Top Row

Once you are comfortable with the home row, it's time to reach for the Top Row. These keys are typed by moving your fingers up from their home row positions. This step focuses on the primary top row keys: qwer and uiop.

Finger Placement:

Left Hand

  • Pinky Finger: reaches up to the 'Q' key
  • Ring Finger: reaches up to the 'W' key
  • Middle Finger: reaches up to the 'E' key
  • Index Finger: reaches up to the 'R' key

Right Hand

  • Index Finger: reaches up to the 'U' key
  • Middle Finger: reaches up to the 'I' key
  • Ring Finger: reaches up to the 'O' key
  • Pinky Finger: reaches up to the 'P' key

After pressing a top row key, always return your finger immediately to its corresponding home row key. This is crucial for building speed and accuracy.

Ready for the next challenge? Go to the Practice page and select Level 2 & 2.1 to practice the top row!

Step 3: Tackling the Bottom Row

The final primary row is the Bottom Row. This row can be tricky, as it requires your fingers to curl downwards. The keys for this step are zxcv and ,./.

Finger Placement:

Left Hand

  • Pinky Finger: reaches down to the 'Z' key
  • Ring Finger: reaches down to the 'X' key
  • Middle Finger: reaches down to the 'C' key
  • Index Finger: reaches down to the 'V' key

Right Hand

  • Index Finger: reaches down to the 'M' key
  • Middle Finger: reaches down to the ',' (comma) key
  • Ring Finger: reaches down to the '.' (period) key
  • Pinky Finger: reaches down to the '/' (slash) key

Remember to return your fingers to the home row after each keystroke. This movement builds precision and reinforces good habits.

Time to practice! Visit the Practice page and choose Level 3 & 3.1 to master the bottom row.

Step 4: Putting It All Together

You've practiced each row individually. Now it's time to combine your skills for a comprehensive exercise. This will test your ability to move between the home, top, and bottom rows smoothly.

Focus on maintaining your rhythm and accuracy. Remember to always return your fingers to the home row after each keystroke. This is the key to building real typing speed.

Congratulations on completing the tutorial! You now have a solid foundation. Continue practicing on the Practice page or test your speed on the main typing test.
